International Day of the Nurse

Today is International Day of the Nurse and whilst the coronavirus has taken centre stage, our nurses are still here, day in, day out, providing care and compassion to those who need it.

At a time where heightened concern and fear are adding to the anxiety around caring for loved ones, our nurses continue to provide a calmness and enable dignity. They do this now, and always.

So today we are celebrating them, and all nurses, by saying a huge thank you. And we’re also saying thank you to you, our wonderful supporters, for always being there for us when we need you. We truly are all in this together.

If your children would like to show your appreciation for our nurses, we have a colouring in pack for Year of the Nurse for you to download here. We’d love to see your children’s pictures, please tag us in on social media, or email them to us at website@stpetershospice.org

A Message from Frank Noble, our Chief Executive

This is an extraordinary time. As one of my colleagues said recently, ‘we’ve managed more change in the past two weeks, than we normally would in five years.’ And she’s right. Amongst the pace of it all, I wanted to give you an insight into what life is like at St Peter’s Hospice at the moment, and how we’re managing to keep our care services going for patients and families.

Frank Noble

We’ve had to face a frenetic series of challenges in a very short space of time. We’re adapting, reacting and changing the way we operate on a daily, sometimes even hourly basis. We are still operating our 15 bed Inpatient Unit, with new arrangements around the use of protective equipment, and visitors to patients. In the community, we’ve shifted from a geographical structure to a single consolidated team. We’re prioritising patients according to need, providing support through telephone and video conferencing, and visiting patients in their homes only when necessary. We’ve increased staffing for our 24/7 Advice Line to ensure that health professionals in the community such as paramedics, GPs, district nurses and care homes, have guaranteed access to expert end-of-life care advice.

As the NHS began preparing to face the challenge of COVID-19, we experienced a dramatic increase in patients being referred to us from hospitals and GPs. In the face of that increase, we had not been prioritised for testing or protective equipment. Our doctors, nurses and health care assistants have had to adapt. At the same time, we have had to cope with significant numbers of staff self-isolating in accordance with Government guidelines.

We’ve had to make some tough decisions too. We recently closed our 51 charity shops, and we’re working tirelessly to postpone, re-book and re-plan all of the fundraising events we had planned for this year. If you’re waiting to hear from us about an event you’ve signed up to, please bear with us, we’ll be in touch soon.

But most importantly, amongst all the change and all the chaos of the world, one thing will always remain the same and that’s our commitment to serving the needs of our patients and their families.

It’s tough, but we’ve got this. And it’s all made that little bit easier knowing that we have the support of you, our wonderful community. We’re going to need you in the coming weeks and months, and we know that you’ll be there for us, as you always are. And we promise to be here for you, now and in the future. Together we will get through this.

Living with Parkinson’s Disease

Sheila, one of our Day Hospice patients talks to us about living with Parkinson’s Disease as part of Parkinson’s Awareness Week…

Sheila

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 25 years ago. For the first ten years it wasn’t too bad. For a while my medication was working quite well and we did some travelling that we wanted to do, going to Australia and New Zealand. But after that it was very difficult. It was a shock, a complete shock to have a diagnosis as bad as this.

“When we were younger, we went to the Scilly Isles every year and I had three children who we brought up in a very sporty environment. I played tennis and I even ran the London Marathon when I was 45. I held it all together for about 10 years, but now it rules my life. It’s ruined anything I ever had, it’s fair to say it’s ruined my life completely. I feel imprisoned for a crime I haven’t committed. It’s a horrible disease.

“I’ve been coming to Day Hospice after my GP referred me for over a year now and I haven’t looked back really. When I was referred to the Hospice I thought, ‘This is not for me’. I soon realised I was wrong. The nurses are one in a million. It has a fear and stigma attached to it but it’s not like that at all.

“It’s been brilliant. I’ve done relaxation, meditation and positive thinking. It’s a very creative atmosphere. I enjoy meeting other people here. Instead of keeping your problems to yourself, you can talk to people here.”

Thank you Sheila for talking to us about your experience at Day Hospice and your life.
