Hospice supporter Claire Filmer has been fundraising for our Room to Care Appeal this year and is rounding it off with a fabulous finale in the shape of a Charity Ball in September.
Claire’s Mum passed away in the Hospice three years ago. She spent her final 11 days there, with Claire and her sister spending many hours sitting by her bedside, mostly in a shared room. Claire tells us, “She needed to be by the nurses’ station so they could keep an eye on her – she always was trouble! Sharing a room was not the easiest, for either the patients or the families. This also meant there was not room for us to stay, which meant that despite being there for so many hours, we were not with her in her final moments, something that I will carry heavily in my heart forever.” Our Room to Care Appeal is raising money for our new Hospice where all patients will have their own rooms, and there will be sofa beds in each room for families to stay over, close to their loved ones.
This year is also the 10th anniversary of the passing of Jane Spicer at St Peter’s Hospice. Jane was Claire’s partner’s wife, and the mother of her stepson, who is now 12.
As the appeal and Jane’s anniversary have come in the same year, Claire’s family decided set themselves a target of raising £10k. They have, along with friends, raised money through Dry January, Tour de Bristol (some of them in tutus!), cake sales, running, walking great distances and they will be taking part in the Bristol Bubble Rush. They have already smashed their £10k target so are now hoping to reach £20k!
The finale to their fundraising will be a Charity Ball on 29 September at the Doubletree Hotel in Bristol city centre to celebrate both Jane and Valerie’s lives, and raise lots of cash! With live music, auctions, a three course meal and wine, it will be a great night.
There are still some tickets available for £50. If you are interested please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
