Bittersweet symphony as orchestra ditch drink to raise hospice funds

The Bristol Symphony Orchestra may sound even more pitch-perfect this January as all 70 players lose the booze in support of the St Peter’s Hospice Room to Care Appeal

The Bristol Symphony Orchestra have committed to supporting the Room to Care Appeal by doing three fundraising events this winter, and are aiming to raise more than £5,000 for the appeal.

As well as taking part in the hospice’s Lose the Booze campaign in January, the orchestra is putting on two orchestral concerts. The Romantic Masterworks concert was held in November 2017, and a big fundraiser concert is planned for 24 November 2018 at Clifton Cathedral.

The Lose the Booze campaign is an opportunity for a healthy start to the New Year while supporting Bristol’s only adult Hospice at the same time. Participants can choose any date in January to start and go alcohol-free for 30 days. Either donate the amount that would have spent on alcohol or ask friends and family for sponsorship!

The orchestra’s alcohol-free challenge will start on Friday 5 January and end on 5 February with an open rehearsal party. Friends and family will be invited to join the musicians for their first drink in 30 days to raise additional funds.

Founded in January 2016, Bristol Symphony Orchestra is a new and exciting young orchestra led by conductor William Goodchild, and works with a variety of established and emerging soloists and with non-classical artists from time to time.

Rachel Goodchild, Orchestra Spokesperson, said: “It is surprising how many orchestra members have family or friends that have used St Peter’s Hospice. This is a fantastic local charity and we are hoping to raise as much as we can for them as well as encouraging other groups to sign up with the Lose the Booze campaign.

We are really looking forward to our concert next November, which should be around the time the new Inpatient Unit opens – a real cause for celebration!”
