Certificate Course for HCA's

Increasingly health care assistants and senior carers are at the forefront of delivering end of life care.


This three-day course is aimed at all non-registered professional carers who are regularly working with individuals who are at end of life.  Its contents aim to develop existing skills and knowledge using the Common Core Competencies for End of Life Care framework

Course content includes:

Communication skills

  • Effective communication with the individual and their family
  • Dealing with issues related to loss
  • Responding to strong emotions

Understanding symptoms, maintaining comfort and wellbeing

  • Identifying the dying process
  • Understand common symptoms experienced at end of life
  • Recognise own role responsibilities within the team
  • Assessing nursing care needs

Best practice in end of life care

  • Identifying tools that can enhance end of life care
  • Advance Care Planning
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Core principles of end of life care

Objectives:

  • That the carer will be able to recall the core principles of end of life care that enhance care given during this time and use tools and frameworks to support this care
  • They will be able to identify when a person is coming towards end of life and be able to assess and respond appropriately and responsibly (within their role) to changes in symptoms and nursing care needs
  • To develop communication skills in relation to caring for people experiencing loss and strong emotion and feel confident selecting strategies to respond to these situations

Course dates and venue:

This course takes place at St Peter's Hospice, Brentry, Bristol on the following dates:

Autumn Term: All sessions run from 9.30am - 4.15pm on the following Mondays: 10th September, 24th September and 8th October 2012 

Spring Term: All sessions run from 9.30am - 4.15pm on the following Wednesdays: 20th February, 6th March and 20th March 2013

Successful achievement of the certificate requires attendance on all three dates

Course cost:

This three-day certificate course costs £225 per person, this includes refreshments and lunch.  Please inform us if you have any special dietary requirements
